What do AEO and SEO have in common?
Almost all of the work. Google says its best practices for SEO "continue to be relevant" for AI search, and a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. If Google can't find, crawl and index your pages, neither kind of result can use them.
For a home-service business, the shared work looks like this:
- Access. Search engines can crawl the site. Google's list for AI features includes "Ensuring that crawling is allowed in robots.txt, and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure."
- Pages. One clear page per service, and pages for the towns you really serve, saying what you do, where and for whom.
- Facts. The same business name, phone, services and license everywhere you're listed. Google's AI-features list includes "Checking that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up-to-date."
- Reputation. Honest reviews, kept recent, on the sites customers check.
- Experience. Pages that load and read well on a phone. Google lists "Providing a great page experience for users" among its AI-features practices.
Google adds that unique, useful content will likely matter "more than any of the other suggestions" in its AI guide. That's the same advice SEO has always had.
