The definition
AI Overviews are AI-generated answers that appear above conventional search results for many queries, assembled from multiple sources and typically carrying links to them.
They appear inconsistently: presence varies by query, by location and over time, and a query showing an Overview one week may not the next.
Why local businesses should care
Where an Overview appears, it takes the position that gets read first. Ranking well beneath one is a weaker outcome than being cited within it.
Overview presence tends to correlate with the same foundations that drive conventional local performance, crawlability, structured data, entity consistency, corroborating sources.
How we treat it
AI Overviews are in our counted set, sampled three times per question under controlled conditions and reported per surface. Google AI Mode is spot coverage only and is not scored.
Nobody can guarantee Overview presence. It is the behaviour of a product neither you nor your agency controls.
Check it yourself
Ask three real buying questions for your category in Google, signed out, with location set. Note whether an Overview appears at all, and whether any business is named.
Repeat the same three questions a week later. The variation you see is the reason single checks prove little.
See where you actually stand
A free Visibility Check runs twelve real buying questions for your category across three surfaces.
