What is AI Mode?

By Youssef Hodaigui, Mindflow Marketing · Last reviewed October 28, 2026

AI Mode is a conversational mode in Google Search that answers a question with a longer AI-written response, links to supporting websites, and lets the searcher ask follow-up questions in the same thread. Google calls it its "most powerful AI search experience."

It's different from AI Overviews, the shorter AI summaries that appear on the normal results page.

01

How does AI Mode work?

AI Mode breaks a question into smaller parts and searches for each one at the same time. Google says it "divides your question into subtopics and searches for each one simultaneously," then combines what it finds into one answer with links. When Google isn't confident in an AI answer, it may show a set of web links instead.

People open it by choosing AI Mode on google.com or in the Google app, or by going to google.com/ai. Google also lets people continue from an AI Overview into AI Mode on mobile. Like any AI answer, it can be wrong: Google's own help page says "AI responses may include mistakes."

02

What's the difference between AI Mode and AI Overviews?

AI Overviews summarize a topic on the regular results page; AI Mode is a separate space for longer, back-and-forth research. Google says "AI Mode expands what AI Overviews can do with more advanced reasoning and ways of interacting." Google applies the same rules to both when it chooses which pages to link.

What does AI Mode mean for a contractor?

AI Mode suits the bigger, multi-part questions homeowners ask before a large job. Take "Should I repair or replace a 15-year-old furnace, what does each cost, and what should I ask an installer?" AI Mode can run separate searches for each part, so a site that answers each of those questions clearly has more ways to be linked.

Showing up in one place doesn't mean an AI tool will name you. In our Home-Service Visibility Study, ChatGPT named 352 of 1,183 businesses that held a Google Maps top-three spot. That measured ChatGPT (the OpenAI API with web search), not Google's AI Mode, so treat it as a sign that each surface needs its own check.

04

How does a business show up in AI Mode answers?

The same way it shows up in Google Search. Google says a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet," and that there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." There's no special file to add. One setting matters: Search Console's Search generative AI control must include your site. It does by default, so check that no one has switched it off.

What helps is ordinary, careful SEO: service pages that answer real customer questions, structured data that matches the visible page, and an up-to-date Google Business Profile, which Google names in its own checklist. Traffic from AI Mode is included in Search Console's Performance report, and Google's Generative AI performance report shows it on its own.
