What is proximity?

By Youssef Hodaigui, Mindflow Marketing · Last reviewed October 28, 2026

Proximity is the local SEO term for how far a business is from the person searching, and it's one of the three factors behind Google's local results. Google's own word for it is distance: "Distance refers to how far each business is from the customer who's searching."

01

Is proximity the same as Google's "distance"?

Yes. Marketers say proximity; Google says distance, and lists it with relevance and prominence as the factors local results are "mainly based on." When an agency report talks about proximity, it means this factor. Google also explains where the searcher is: "If a customer doesn't share where they are, Google uses what it knows about their location."

So the starting point is the customer, not your office.

02

Why does your map ranking change from one street to the next?

Because distance is measured from each searcher, the same search can show a different set of businesses a few miles away. A plumber who ranks first for "plumber near me" at the shop may not appear for a customer across the county. So one rank check from your own office tells you little about what your customers see.

Our study searched Google Maps from one fixed point in each city, at city-level zoom. A search from another point in the same city could return a different top three. How the study was done.

To see what your customers see, check the same search from several points across your service area, not just from the shop: one from each town you list on your profile, on a phone. If you show up near the shop but not two towns over, that's distance at work, and it's normal. Judge your progress by the towns where you're close enough to compete, and by what's within your control: relevance and prominence.

03

Where is a service-area business measured from?

Google doesn't publish that. What its rules do say: a service-area business hides its address from customers but still gives Google one it can verify ("To verify your business, enter a business address that Google can find"), and its service area "shouldn't be more than about 2 hours of driving time from where your business is based." So Google knows where you're based.

Google's ranking page names relevance, distance and prominence. It doesn't list service areas as a ranking factor; Google describes the service area as showing "customers where you can provide your products and services."

04

Can you improve proximity?

Not directly. You can't move your customers, and the workarounds break Google's rules. A virtual office "isn't eligible for a Business Profile," and "service-area businesses can only have one profile for the whole area that they serve," so a second profile for a city you drive to isn't allowed. What you can work on is the other two factors.

Improve relevance with a complete profile and website pages for each service and each area you really serve. Build prominence with reviews and real local mentions. Those are the factors you can change when you're not the closest company.
