Who you are, provable, everywhere.
What this stage is for
An engine deciding whether to name your business in an answer is doing something narrower than judging quality. It is checking whether it can establish, with confidence, that you exist, that you are the business the asker means, and that the facts it holds about you agree with each other. Where those facts conflict, the safest thing for the engine to do is name someone else.
This is the stage most often skipped, because nothing about it looks like marketing. It is also the stage that most often explains a business that does good work and cannot get named. Conflicting facts are not a small problem to a system whose entire job is to avoid saying something wrong.
The work in this stage
One exact name, address and phone, everywhere
A single canonical form of each, written identically across the website, the Google Business Profile, every directory, every social profile and every citation. Not approximately the same. Identically. “Suite 200” and “Ste 200” are two different facts to a machine reading at scale.
A hardened Google Business Profile
Correct primary category, honest secondary categories, service areas that match where you actually work, hours that are true, and the profile fields that most businesses leave empty filled in properly. Hardening also means reducing suspension exposure — the profile is the single highest-consequence asset in local visibility, and the recovery path is slow.
Schema and entity signals that agree
Organization and LocalBusiness markup that states the same facts the profile states, with sameAs links to the properties you actually control. Schema that contradicts the visible page is worse than no schema, because it is a machine-readable assertion that you are inconsistent.
Every conflicting listing hunted down
Old addresses, a previous phone number, a business name from before a rebrand, duplicate profiles created by an aggregator. These are found and corrected or suppressed one at a time. It is unglamorous work and there is no tool that finishes it.
A fencing company in Marietta
Illustrative scenario: a representative pattern rather than a specific client engagement. No client data is described here.
A fencing contractor working Cobb County had a good site, real reviews and twelve years of history, and could not get named in local answers. Nothing about the marketing looked broken.
The problem was three facts. The Google Business Profile carried a suite number the website did not. A 2019 directory sweep had propagated a phone number the company stopped using when it changed providers. And the legal entity name on the state licence record differed from the trading name on every marketing asset, by a small margin, though enough that a machine matching records could not confirm they described one business.
None of those three is a marketing problem. All three are reasons for an engine to route around a business rather than risk naming it. Closing them is unglamorous, takes weeks, and is frequently the highest-return work in an engagement.
Identity is complete when the same facts about your business can be found in every place an engine looks, and no contradicting version survives anywhere we can reach. That is a checkable state, not a judgement call, and the conflicts we found and closed are listed on your Work Ledger by name.
The most common failure is treating this as a one-time cleanup. Identity degrades, an aggregator republishes an old record, a staff member updates a profile with a slightly different name, a new directory scrapes stale data. It is checked on an ongoing basis rather than fixed once and assumed.
Fair questions
Why does this come before content?
Because content from a business the engine cannot confidently identify is content it will hesitate to cite. Fixing identity first makes everything downstream more likely to land.
How long does it take?
The website and profile work is fast. Hunting conflicting listings is the long tail, most of it lands in the first 60 days, and stragglers surface for months as aggregators refresh.
Is this the same as citation building?
No. Citation building adds listings. This stage makes the listings that exist agree with each other, which is a different and more valuable job.
