This is where you become the answer, present on the surfaces engines actually consult when someone asks who to call.

WHY THIS STAGE EXISTS

What this stage is for

An assistant answering “who should I call for this” does not invent a shortlist. It assembles one from sources it consults, your site, directories, review platforms, forums, local press, and whatever else it has learned to trust for that category and place. Retrieval is the stage that puts you into those sources deliberately rather than hoping.

The important shift here is that your website stops being the destination and becomes one input among several. A business can have an excellent site and still be invisible in answers because the surfaces that feed the answer never mention it.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS

The work in this stage

Citable content on the pages that matter

Content built to be quoted: specific, checkable, and attributable to you. Generic advice fails that test, because it is available everywhere — there is no reason for an engine to attribute it to you rather than anyone else. Specificity is what makes a source worth naming.

Presence on the surfaces engines consult

Identified per market and per trade, because they differ. The directories that matter for a plumber in Georgia are not the ones that matter for a specialty retailer in the UK, and assuming a universal list is how effort gets spent on surfaces nobody consults.

Reviews at a steady, honest cadence

Volume, recency and distribution all matter, and a burst followed by silence reads worse than a slow constant trickle. Everything here runs inside Google's review policy and the FTC's fake-review rule, no incentives for positive sentiment, no gating, no review-writing on a customer's behalf.

The citation trail

The path an assistant follows from a general question to naming your business specifically. Built deliberately: the mentions, links and corroborating references that let an engine confirm you are a real, established, appropriate answer.

IN PRACTICE

An HVAC business that published forty blog posts

Illustrative scenario: a representative pattern rather than a specific client engagement. No client data is described here.

An HVAC company had published forty posts over two years, seasonal maintenance tips, how a heat pump works, when to replace a unit. Competent, readable, and almost entirely uncited.

The reason is that none of it contained anything an engine could not get from a thousand other sources. “Change your filter every 90 days” is true, useful to a homeowner, and worthless as a citation, because there is no reason to attribute it to this business rather than any other.

What moved the number was narrower and less obviously appealing: local permit requirements by jurisdiction, actual equipment lead times in that market during a specific season, and the county-level detail nobody else had written down. Three specific pages outperformed forty general ones, because specificity is the only thing that makes a source worth naming.

HOW IT IS PROVEN

Retrieval shows up in AI Share of Answer, whether you are recommended for the twelve buying questions, per surface. It is also the stage where movement takes longest to appear, because it depends on sources you do not own updating on their own schedule.

THE COMMON FAILURE

Publishing volume and calling it retrieval. Twenty generic posts do not create a citation trail; three specific, checkable, verifiably yours pages sometimes do. The question to ask of any piece is whether it contains something an engine could not get from anyone else.

FAIR QUESTIONS

Fair questions

How long until this shows up?

Longer than the other stages, typically two to three quarters before the AI numbers move meaningfully. Anyone promising faster on this specific stage is describing a different stage.

Can you guarantee AI citations?

No, and a guarantee would be a warning sign. These are third-party systems with their own ranking logic that changes without notice. What we can do is measure it honestly and work the inputs.

Do reviews affect AI answers?

They affect the sources AI answers are built from, which amounts to the same thing. They also affect whether a recommendation converts once it happens.
