Choosing GBP categories: the owner's guide

The field that decides which searches you are eligible for, and the one most often set in thirty seconds during setup.

Key takeaways
  • Primary category decides eligibility. Get it wrong and optimisation never reaches the query.
  • Pick the job that pays best, described exactly, not the broadest label you qualify for.
  • Read your competitors' primary categories. It explains more ranking gaps than most audits.
  • Category changes can trigger a profile review. Make one edit at a time.

Primary category is close to a ranking decision

Google uses your primary category to decide which searches you are eligible for at all. Get it wrong and no amount of optimisation reaches the queries you want, because you were never in the pool.

Secondary categories widen eligibility. They do not carry the same weight, and stacking them does not help. A profile listing eleven categories reads as a business unsure what it does.

How to pick the primary

Name the job that pays best and that you want more of. Then find the category that describes that job most exactly, not the broadest one you technically qualify for.

A roofer who also does gutters and siding should usually be a roofing contractor, not a general contractor. The broad label competes against everyone and describes nobody.

How to check your competitors

Open the pack results for your main query and read each competitor's primary category. Where the top three share one category and you have a different one, you have found something worth an hour of thought.

That is a five-minute check and it explains more ranking gaps than most audits do.

The risk when you change it

Category changes are one of the edits that can trigger a review of your profile, and profiles do get suspended after them. The change is usually right and it is not free.

Make it deliberately, one change at a time, with the rest of the profile already consistent. Do not stack a category change on top of a name change and an address edit in the same week.

“A profile listing eleven categories reads as a business unsure what it does.”
