The map pack

How the Google local pack actually works

Three results, one map, and a ranking system that behaves differently from everything else on the page.

Key takeaways
  • The pack weighs relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is the one you cannot write past.
  • Primary category decides which searches you are eligible for at all.
  • A single city-level rank hides the neighbourhoods where you are invisible.
  • Where the gap is proximity, the lever is a real location, not more content.

What the pack is deciding

The local pack is answering a narrower question than organic search. Organic asks which page best answers the query. The pack asks which businesses are plausible, close enough, and trusted enough to hand a stranger.

Three inputs carry most of it: relevance, distance, and prominence. Distance is the one owners underestimate, and it is the one you cannot write your way past.

Distance does more work than anyone wants it to

Run your main service plus your city from your office. Then run it from a suburb nine miles out, signed out, with location set. Most owners find they hold the first search and vanish on the second.

That falloff is proximity. It is not a content gap, a schema gap, or a review gap. Where a market sits outside the radius your verified address can reach, the honest answer is that no page fixes it and a real location might.

What you can actually move

Primary category. The strongest lever available and the one most often set once and forgotten. It should describe the job you want more of, not the widest label you qualify for.

Profile completeness. Services, attributes, hours, description, photos. Every empty field is a question Google asked and you declined to answer.

Reviews, recent ones. Volume matters, recency matters more than owners expect, and both feed the pack directly.

Proximity you can claim honestly. A verified location in a market you actually serve changes the geometry. A virtual office does not, and it is the fastest route to a suspension.

The limit worth knowing

Pack position moves for reasons nobody outside Google can see. Competitors get verified, categories shift, the radius appears to breathe. A month where you slip two places is often a month where nothing about you changed.

This is why we measure position on a grid across the city rather than as one number, and why a report that shows a single city rank is telling you less than it appears to.

“A month where you slip two places is often a month where nothing about you changed.”
