Why no one can guarantee rankings

By Youssef Hodaigui, Mindflow Marketing · Last reviewed November 1, 2026

No one can guarantee where you'll rank because Google decides, nobody outside Google controls its systems, and results change with who's searching, where, on what device and when. Google says it directly: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." A guarantee you're offered usually covers less than it sounds. What a provider can promise is the work, how you'll see it, and fair terms.

01

What does Google say about ranking guarantees?

Google's advice on hiring an SEO is unusually blunt. It says "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google," and "If they guarantee you that their changes will give you first place in search results, find someone else." It also says Google "never accepts money to include or rank sites in our search results."

The same page warns: "Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a "special relationship" with Google, or advertise a "priority submit" to Google." There's no priority lane to buy. Advertising doesn't buy one either: "Advertising with Google won't have any effect on your site's presence in our search results."

Google's guidance for Business Profiles says the same about the map: "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google."

02

Why can't anyone outside Google control where you rank?

Because the ranking is done by Google's own automated systems, which weigh many signals, change often and show different results to different people. An agency can improve what Google sees about your business. It can't decide what Google does with it, and it can't stop your competitors improving too.

Google describes its systems as automated ones "that look at many factors and signals" about "hundreds of billions of web pages." It says it regularly improves them "through rigorous testing and evaluation" and runs "hundreds of thousands of experiments every year." A position that holds today can move after a change nobody outside Google saw coming.

Results also differ by person. Google uses "your location, past Search history, and Search settings," and Search Console's help says results are "specific to the time, place, device, and recent history of the person searching." So "number one" isn't one fixed spot. A plumber can rank first for a homeowner two streets away and fifth for one across town.

Even doing everything right doesn't promise a place. Google says that meeting its Search Essentials "doesn't mean that Google will crawl, index, or serve its content."

03

Does that hold for the map and AI answers too?

Yes, and for the map it's even clearer. Google says local results "are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity," and distance depends on where each searcher stands. AI answers add another layer: tools like ChatGPT build each answer fresh, and a strong map position doesn't mean they'll name you.

In our October 2026 study of 8 home-service trades in 50 U.S. metros, ChatGPT named 352 of the 1,183 businesses that held a Google Maps top-three spot. ("ChatGPT" here means the OpenAI API with web search.) Being at the top of the map and being named in an AI answer are different results, and neither is in an agency's control. How the study was done.

So anyone guaranteeing a place in ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews or the map is making the same promise Google says no one can make. Our guide on how to show up in ChatGPT answers covers what you can influence.

What does a ranking guarantee usually cover?

Less than it sounds. A guarantee is only as good as its fine print: which searches, which part of the page, measured where, for how long, and what you get if it's missed. Many guarantees are met by ranking for searches almost nobody makes, or count an ad or a single day as success. Read these terms before you sign.

AskWhy it matters
Which searches does it cover?Rare or very long searches are easy to rank for and bring few calls. Your company name doesn't count.
Which results count: ads, the map or regular results? An ad at the top is paid for, not earned, and stops when the spending does.
Measured from where, and on what device? Results change by location and device, so the same check can pass or fail.
Which page has to rank?A throwaway page ranking isn't your service page ranking.
For how long?A ranking reached for one day can satisfy the terms and then disappear.
What counts as missing it?Vague terms make it hard to ever claim a miss.
What do you get if it's missed?"We'll keep working for free" means more of the same work, not your money back.
What methods will they use to hit it?A deadline invites shortcuts that Google penalizes.
05

How can chasing a guarantee hurt your business?

A guarantee rewards hitting a target quickly, and the quickest tactics are often the ones Google penalizes. Buying links is an example: Google's spam policies list "Buying or selling links for ranking purposes," and "Sites that violate our policies may rank lower in results or not appear in results at all." The penalty lands on your site, not the agency's.

Google is clear about who carries that risk: "Ultimately, you are responsible for the actions of any companies you hire."

There's a contract risk too. Guarantees are sometimes paired with a long minimum term, so the guarantee keeps you paying while you wait to find out whether it was met. In the owner comments we collected, being locked into a contract was one of the most common complaints. Read the exit terms as carefully as the guarantee.

06

Is "Google Guaranteed" a ranking guarantee?

No. Google Guaranteed was a badge on Local Services Ads, the pay-per-lead ads, that came with a money-back guarantee for customers who booked through those ads. It never promised a ranking. Google has since replaced it with the Google Verified badge and ended the money-back guarantee.

Google Verified means a business passed Google's screening, which can include background, license and insurance checks depending on trade and location. It doesn't guarantee where your ad appears. If your website, trucks or estimates still say "Google Guaranteed," update them. Our Google Verified entry explains the change, and our Local Services Ads guide covers how those ads work.

07

What can a provider fairly promise?

The things it controls: the work it will do each month, how you'll see that work and its results, who you'll deal with, that your accounts stay in your name, and how you can leave. Those promises can be written into a contract and checked every month. A forecast with conditions is fine; a guaranteed position isn't.

Google gives you the question to ask: "What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe? How do you measure your success?" A good answer is a range, the conditions it depends on and the numbers you'll see along the way, such as calls and booked jobs by source.

What does Mindflow promise?

Here's how Mindflow does it. We don't guarantee rankings or placement in AI answers. What we put in writing instead is the work in your proposal, a written report every month and a call every quarter. You deal with Youssef directly, so you know who is responsible for that work.

The first 90 days are committed and billed monthly. After that it's month to month with 30 days' notice. No setup fee. You own every account. See how we work.

Frequently asked questions

Is a money-back SEO guarantee worth anything? Only if the terms are specific. Check which searches it covers, which results count, how it's measured and for how long, and whether you get money back or just more work. A guarantee met by ranking for a search nobody makes leaves you with nothing to claim. Weigh the exit terms more than the guarantee.

How long does SEO take, according to Google? Google doesn't give a fixed timeline. Its starter guide says, "Some changes might take effect in a few hours, others could take several months." You may see "four months to a year" attributed to Google; we didn't find that line on Google's current hiring page (updated June 5, 2026). Ask any provider what it expects, and why.

Can an agency guarantee more calls or leads? Not honestly, for the same reason it can't guarantee rankings: it doesn't control Google, your competitors or your customers. It can promise the work, a clear report of calls and booked jobs by source, and an honest forecast with conditions.

Can anyone guarantee my business will show up in ChatGPT? No. AI tools write each answer fresh, and the sources they use change. In our study, ChatGPT named fewer than a third of businesses in the Google Maps top three. A provider can improve what AI tools can find and confirm about your business, but it can't promise they'll name you.

Is a "pay only when you rank" plan safe? It shifts the risk in ways worth checking. The provider gets paid for reaching positions, so ask which searches count, whether they bring calls, and what methods it uses to get there quickly. Shortcuts that break Google's spam policies can cost you rankings later, and Google says you are responsible for what the companies you hire do.
