Quick answer

Does ChatGPT name the Charlotte companies Google Maps shows first?

Sometimes. In our October 2026 study, ChatGPT named 9 of the 24 Charlotte businesses in the Google Maps top three across eight trades; across all 50 metros it named 352 of 1,183. But only 3 Charlotte businesses made all three lists, so six of the nine it named weren't in Google's local pack.

Google's map results and the local pack inside its regular results are separate lists, captured separately, and in Charlotte they shared only 10 of 24 businesses. ChatGPT (here, the OpenAI API with web search, five answers per trade) didn't follow either list closely. It reads the web, so what it finds about you outside Google matters.

Which Charlotte trades stood out?

Electricians stood out most: ChatGPT named all 3 of Charlotte's Google Maps leaders, against 50 of 147 across all 50 metros. Remodeling was unusual too, with 2 of 3 Maps leaders named but none of the local pack. For HVAC and water damage, it named none of the Maps top three.

In a separate seven-trade check on October 17–18, ChatGPT named 3 of 21 Charlotte Maps leaders: 2 of 3 landscaping companies and 1 of 3 junk removal companies.

Which license records cover Charlotte contractors in both states?

In North Carolina, general contractors are on the Licensing Board for General Contractors' search and electricians on the Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors' search. If you also work in South Carolina, its Contractor's Licensing Board has its own lookup. A customer, or an AI tool, can check whichever record applies to the job.

  • North Carolina general contractorsthe board's search covers classifications such as Residential and specialty ones like S (Roofing), and accepts a company name, license number or phone number.
  • North Carolina electriciansthe board lists classifications from Limited, Intermediate and Unlimited to the Residential Dwelling license (SP-SFD). Show yours the way the record states it.
  • South Carolinathe Contractor's Licensing Board covers general and mechanical contractors, with a "Licensee Lookup - Contractors" search.

Each record should carry the same business name as your site and Business Profile. For electricians this matters more than most: across our study, answers about named electrical contractors cited a government or licensing site in 1,298 of 1,500 cases and manufacturer or certification sources in only 27.

NC Licensing Board for General Contractors, NC State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors and SC Contractor's Licensing Board pages, read November 1, 2026. This isn't legal advice; each board decides what your work requires in its state. Citation counts: what ChatGPT checks before recommending a contractor.

What should a Charlotte contractor fix first?

Questions about AI search in Charlotte

Why would ChatGPT name Charlotte remodelers that Google's local pack left out?

Our study shows what answers cited, not why. One clue: across all 50 metros, answers about named remodelers cited BuildZoom in 788 of 1,500 cases, more than in any other trade. Third-party records like that can be found and cited whether or not a company sits in the local pack, so keep yours accurate.

We're licensed electricians in North Carolina. Where should the license number go?

Where customers check before they call: your about page, your footer and your main service pages, written exactly as the board's record shows it, with your classification. Electrical answers in our study leaned on license records far more than on certifications. Whether North Carolina requires the number in your ads is a question for the board; this isn't legal advice.

ChatGPT named none of Charlotte's Maps leaders for HVAC. Who did it name?

In our check it named 2 of the 3 HVAC companies in Google's local pack, and none of the Maps top three, which also weren't in the pack. For a Charlotte HVAC company, that points to the local pack: a complete Business Profile, steady reviews and service pages that match your categories.

Is one check enough to judge how AI treats my Charlotte trade?

No. Each trade was checked on one day with five answers, and "named" isn't a stable ranking. Charlotte plumbing shows why: ChatGPT named 1 of 3 Maps leaders but none of the local pack plumbers. A different week could look different, which is why your monthly report dates every AI check.

We work in North and South Carolina. Can one plan cover both?

Yes, one plan covers your whole service area. Complete Local: "One metro, one service area." Complete Regional: "A metro and the cities around it, or two neighboring metros." Complete Multi-Market: "Three or more metros, several states, or a franchise." Your proposal confirms which fits. We also compare your license records in each state with your site and flag any difference for you to fix with that board.

How long does SEO take?

Usually months, not weeks. How fast depends on your competitors and on how complete your Business Profile and site are today.

Do you guarantee rankings?

No. No one can guarantee a spot on Google or in an AI answer. We show you the work and the results.

Is AI SEO extra?

No. AI search optimization is included in SEO in every plan.

Am I locked into a contract?

The first 90 days are committed and billed monthly. After that it's month to month with 30 days' notice.

Who owns my accounts and website?

You do. Every account stays in your name, and website files and copy are yours once paid.

Will you work with my competitor?

No. We won't work with your direct competitor in your area.

Do I need a new website?

Not always. If yours can't turn visits into calls, we'll say so and quote a site separately.

Do you run Google Ads, Local Services Ads or ChatGPT ads?

Case by case. Our plans cover SEO, AI search, your Google Business Profile, reviews and conversion. When paid ads fit your market and goals, we scope Google Ads, Local Services Ads or ChatGPT ads in your proposal. Ad spend goes to the platform and isn't part of our fee.
