What is AI visibility, and how is it different from SEO?
AI visibility, also called answer engine optimization or AEO, is the practice of getting a business named inside AI-generated answers. SEO earns a ranked link a buyer clicks. AEO earns a mention inside the answer itself, in Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini, where no click may ever happen.
The two run on overlapping machinery. Google states that its generative features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems, so a page has to be indexed before it can be quoted. Classic SEO is the floor, not an alternative to it.
What sits above that floor is different work. An assistant naming Knoxville businesses draws on how clearly you are defined as an entity, how the web describes you, what independent sources say, and whether your pages answer in a liftable passage.
Nobody can force a recommendation. We build the entity footprint, citable pages and review base assistants draw on, then score where you land on twelve frozen buying questions across three platforms each quarter, screenshots archived.
What actually shapes a Knoxville search plan?
Knoxville is two regulatory markets under one name. The city and the county enforce building codes six years apart, and the rebate your competitor can offer depends on a membership you may not have.
- Knoxville city housing is 13 years older than Nashville's on the same Census table
- The city runs 2024 building codes; unincorporated Knox County still runs 2018
- Outside the city limits, the State of Tennessee issues and inspects electrical permits
- TVA rebates of $800 to $1,100 require Quality Contractor Network membership
| Condition | What the source records | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Housing stock | On ACS 2020–2024 five-year estimates the city of Knoxville records a median year of construction of 1974. Nashville-Davidson reads 1987 and Chattanooga 1976 on the same table and vintage. At metro level Knoxville is 1986 against Nashville's 1994. Margins of error run one to two years, so the gap sits well outside sampling noise. | US Census ACS 2020–2024, tables B25003, B25024, B25035, B19013 |
| Tenure and income | The city is also the thinnest owner-occupier pool of the three: 46.6% owner-occupancy and 52.3% single-family detached, with median household income of $54,039. The metro inverts it hard at 70.4% owner-occupied, 70.1% detached and $72,422. | Same ACS tables and vintage |
| Climate load | 3,636 annual heating degree days against 1,526 cooling. | NOAA NCEI U.S. Climate Normals 1991–2020, station USW00013891 (McGhee Tyson Airport) |
| Code edition in force | The City of Knoxville Plans Review and Inspections Department enforces the 2024 International codes with the 2023 NEC. Unincorporated Knox County enforces the 2018 International codes, adopted by Ordinance O-18-10-101 on 19 November 2018. | City of Knoxville Plans Review and Inspections; Knox County Codes Administration |
| County amendments | Residential fire sprinklers are optional, blower-door air-leakage testing is removed, duct blower testing is removed, whole-house mechanical ventilation is optional and programmable thermostats are not required. None of those reliefs applies inside the city. | Knox County published amendments to the 2018 IRC |
| Electrical permits | Inside the city limits the permit comes from the City. Outside them the State of Tennessee issues the electrical permit and performs the inspection through core.tn.gov, since Knoxville Utilities Board stopped reselling state permits on 1 January 2025. Knox County also accepts third-party inspections for most stages, though gas meter sets and all final life-safety inspections stay with the county. | Knoxville Utilities Board; Tennessee State Fire Marshal |
| Licence threshold | Knox County is one of nine Tennessee counties requiring a state Home Improvement Licence for residential work from $3,000 to $24,999. Fencing, roofing and painting are named in its scope. Above $24,999 a full contractor licence applies. | Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, Board for Licensing Contractors |
| Utility rebates | Knoxville Utilities Board is a TVA local power company, and TVA EnergyRight publishes residential rebates of $800 for an air-source or dual-fuel heat pump at 17 SEER2 or higher, $500 at 15 to 16.99 SEER2, $800 for a ductless mini split, up to $400 for central air conditioning and $300 for duct sealing or replacement. Those are the amounts published as at 28 July 2026, with no expiry stated. TVA states that all rebate-eligible upgrades must be completed by a member of the Quality Contractor Network, and that the contractor must join within 90 days of project completion for the upgrade to qualify. | TVA EnergyRight rebate page and Quality Contractor Network terms |
| Storm record | Knox County logged 17 distinct hail days across 2015 to 2024, none of them carrying a recorded property damage figure, and one tornado. | NOAA NCEI Storm Events Database 2015–2024, Knox County |
The county's amendments to the 2018 IRC widen the gap further. Blower-door testing, duct testing and whole-house ventilation are required inside the city and optional or removed in the county's 2018 amendments.
From the storm record: The recorded loss driver here is water and thunderstorm wind, including a February 2019 flood with $32.5 million in recorded property damage.
What we read from that, and this part is our judgement rather than anything the sources state: A median home built in 1974 has passed through the typical heating and cooling replacement window two or three times and sits in original cast-iron or galvanised plumbing territory.
Also ours, and not the sources: Combined with 3,636 heating degree days against 1,526 cooling, this is a heating-led replacement market rather than a cooling-led one.
Two more readings are ours. So a contractor outside that network is quoting against competitors who can take $800 to $1,100 off the same job without touching their own margin.
In a metro whose median home was built in 1986 and whose city core was built in 1974, the pipeline this applies to is most of the market.

Six pieces run inside one engagement, each reported monthly with the denominator beside the number.
Local SEO and Google Maps
We read Google Business Profile and map-grid position across Knox County, not off one pin. A grid shows whether you lose on trust signals or on distance.
Organic search
Technical foundations, architecture and the searches that turn into high-ticket Knoxville jobs, built from the work you closed.
AI visibility and entity work
Entity disambiguation, organisation schema, knowledge-graph alignment and passages an assistant can lift whole. This decides whether ChatGPT, Perplexity or AI Overviews name you or a competitor.
Reputation and brand SERP
What a buyer and an assistant see when they search your name. Where the job spec changes at the county line, what you hold and where you work beats a slogan.
Conversion tracking
We track calls and forms through to the booked job, because visibility that never reaches one still costs you months.
Measurement you can audit
Share of Answer across twelve frozen buying questions, three platforms, three runs each, scored out of twelve with screenshots archived and dated.
Read the full methodRankings are never guaranteed. Anything we could not trace to a primary source is absent from this page, not estimated. The audit runs the same six layers described on the pricing page, and Share of Answer is scored quarterly.
How the first 90 days work
Every engagement opens with a diagnostic, not a pitch. Our first 90 days set a baseline you can hold me to and put the first movement on record.
- Free Visibility Check. Your trade's twelve real buying questions across Google Maps, Google and the assistants. You keep the screenshots.
- Local Visibility Audit. Crawlability, entity and schema state, map-grid position across Knox County, review base and competitive gap.
- Baseline measurement. We score Share of Answer before any work starts, so the number exists in writing.
- Foundations, weeks 1 to 6. Technical fixes, entity and organisation schema, Google Business Profile, and pages answering what Knoxville buyers ask.
- Authority and content, weeks 4 to 12. Citable pages, review systems and the off-site corroboration assistants use to judge a company real.
- First remeasurement. Same questions, same conditions, scored against the baseline. Movement or none, both go in our report.

What has Mindflow Marketing actually produced?
Two clients gave us written permission to publish, and neither is a company of this market. Precision Fenceworks is a Georgia fence company working Athens, Alpharetta, Atlanta and Gwinnett, verified live 2026-06-16. Fireside Antiques is a Baton Rouge, Louisiana eCommerce dealer, data pulled 2026-06-10.
PRECISION FENCEWORKS · GEORGIA
In Athens, where it ranks second in the map pack, Precision Fenceworks is also third organic and named by three of the four major AI assistants, with Perplexity giving it as its first pick. 87 AI mentions across 72 cited pages, and 631 Precision Fenceworks reviews at a 4.9 average.
In Alpharetta it is first organic and third in the map pack, beaten on proximity and not on trust signals.
In Atlanta it has no reachable map presence against 100,000-plus impressions in sixteen months. Its pin sits in Alpharetta, proximity decides the map pack, and no page moves a building.
FIRESIDE ANTIQUES · LOUISIANA
Five of eight tracked core terms ranking strong, with dining tables, armoires, mirrors and coffee tables all recovered to first position.
A national eCommerce catalogue, not a local service business: evidence of method, not a forecast for a Knoxville contractor.
Neither is a Knoxville company, and I am not going to imply otherwise. What travels is our method: the audit, the frozen questions, the stated denominators, the work ledger.
What we cannot show: revenue, lead volume and job values. Neither permission covers it, so we cannot say whether this became money. Two clients is not a large portfolio and we are not going to present it as one.
What does SEO and AI visibility cost in Knoxville?
We publish every rate. A Visibility Check is free. A Local Visibility Audit is $3,500 to $7,500, credited against your first invoice if you start monthly within 30 calendar days. Monthly starts at $3,500 on a 90-day initial term, then runs month to month. No setup fee, no annual contract.
The credit caps at that first invoice and does not carry. At the bottom of our range a $3,500 audit against a $3,500 first month costs you nothing if you continue. At the top, a $7,500 audit credits $3,500 and the other $4,000 is spent. Run that sum at your own desk.

Knoxville SEO and AI visibility: common questions
Do you have an office in Knoxville?
No. We work from Atlanta and serve Knoxville from there. We will not rent a mailbox to look local: a fake address gets a Google Business Profile suspended, and it would be the first dishonest thing on this page. Meetings are remote, the work identical.
Who does SEO and AI visibility for businesses in Knoxville?
Mindflow Marketing, a founder-led SEO and AEO agency run by Youssef Hodaigui, twenty-five years in search, from Atlanta, serving Knoxville and the wider Knox County metro. He runs every engagement himself: local SEO and Maps, organic search, AI visibility, reputation and conversion, reported monthly.
Do you have any Knoxville clients you can show me?
Not yet. Our two clients with permission to publish are in Georgia and Louisiana, and both records are linked above. What transfers to Knoxville is our method, not a forecast. If a named local result is what you need before signing, better you know now.
Can you rank a Knoxville company in the Google map pack from Atlanta?
Yes. The map pack scores distance from your Google Business Profile pin to the searcher, not from ours, so where your pin sits in the Knoxville metro is what matters. If it sits outside the area you want, no content moves it, and we say so early.
Will you work with my competitor in Knoxville?
No. We take one company per metro in each service category. If a Knoxville roofing company signs first, we turn down every other Knoxville roofer for the life of that engagement, including better-funded ones. It caps how large we grow, deliberately.
Where does your business show up in Knoxville right now?
