What does SEO do for a contractor?

SEO for a contractor is the work that gets your company in front of homeowners who search for a project you do, then gives them enough to choose you. That happens in three places: the Google map, the regular search results and AI answers like Google's AI Overviews and ChatGPT. One plan covers all three.

Homeowners planning a project tend to search in three ways:

  • The project and the place"kitchen remodel near me" or "room addition contractor in [your town]."
  • The mapthe three companies Google shows first, with their reviews and photos.
  • Your nameafter a referral or a yard sign, they look you up to check you're real, licensed and well reviewed.

Good contractor SEO works on all three, not just the first.

How often does ChatGPT name remodelers who lead on Google Maps?

In our October 2026 study, ChatGPT named 28 of the 146 remodelers in Google's Maps top three when we asked which companies a homeowner should call. A top-three map spot and a mention in an AI answer are two separate results, so we work on both. Each trade's count, with its own base, is below.

A separate check asked ChatGPT about named remodelers: "A friend recommended [Business] in [City, ST]. What can you tell me about them? Are they legit and good to hire?" Of 1,500 answers, 1,334 cited a license or registration record, 1,261 the company's own website and 1,195 the Better Business Bureau. Houzz came up in 869 and BuildZoom in 788. How do reviews work when homeowners rarely leave them?

In our October 2026 sample, the median remodeler with Google reviews had 38 reviews and 1 new review in the last 90 days. The median HVAC company had 735 and 38. So a remodeler who adds a review or two a month is already ahead of the median remodeler in our sample.

The 90-day count comes from each business's newest 100 reviews, so it's a floor for very busy profiles. Star ratings didn't separate the businesses ChatGPT named from the ones it didn't.

Every plan includes a review program. Requests go out from your own system, which we help you set up, and every new review gets a reply drafted for your approval. No paid or filtered reviews.

Which pages does a contractor's website need?

A contractor's site needs a page for each type of project you want more of, and a town page only where you have real work to show there. In our crawl of 5,072 home-service contractor sites, 2,495 had at least one location or service-area page. Among the 659 remodeler sites, 184 did.

  • One page per project typekitchens, bathrooms, additions, whole-home remodels, decks; whatever you want more of. In the same crawl, 3,618 of 5,072 sites had five or more service pages (382 of 659 remodeler sites).
  • Project pagesreal jobs, with your photos and the scope in plain words. Our contractor marketing page shows what goes on one.
  • Town pages, with carea page for a town where you've done real work and can say something specific. Never a copy with the town name swapped; those don't help homeowners and can hurt you.

A page for each service and town you really cover, answers to the questions customers ask, and a review process your team can run.

  3. 03Ongoing

    grow and report.

New pages where the searches are, review replies, changes that turn more visits into calls, and a plain report on what we did, what moved and what's next. You get a written report every month and a call every quarter.

What should you ask before hiring a contractor SEO agency?

Ask any SEO agency, us included, the same five questions before you sign: who owns the accounts, how long you're committed, whether they'll work with your competitor, what they promise, and who you will deal with. Clear answers in writing tell you more than a sales deck does.

AskWhat a straight answer sounds like
Who owns the accounts and the website?Everything in your name, and you keep it if you leave.
How long am I committed?A short fixed start, then month to month, in writing.
Will you work with my competitor?A clear yes or no for your area, not "it depends."
Do you guarantee rankings? No ranking or AI-answer guarantee. A promise of a spot is a warning sign.
Who will I deal with?A named person you can call.

Our answers to the first four are in the questions at the end of this page. On the last one: Mindflow is founder-led, and you deal with Youssef Hodaigui directly: calls and texts are answered as they come in, emails usually within hours.

Questions about contractor SEO

How much should a contractor expect to pay for SEO?
With Mindflow, plans start at $2,800 a month for one metro, $4,500 for a metro and the cities around it, and $8,500 for three or more metros. Your price depends on how competitive your trade is in your market and how many services you want to grow. There's no setup fee, and you get your exact price in writing first. See plans and prices.
What is an SEO contractor?
The phrase often means a freelance SEO hired on contract, not SEO for contractors. A freelancer can work well for a defined project. Mindflow is an agency that runs ongoing SEO, AI search, reviews and conversion work for contractors and home-service companies, under one plan with accounts in your name.
Do you work with roofers, HVAC companies and other trades?
Yes. This page is for remodelers and general contractors who sell projects to homeowners. Trades with more urgent calls have their own pages, like roofing and HVAC, and our main SEO for home-service companies page covers every trade. Every trade gets the same plan and the same starting prices; what changes is which searches and pages we focus on, and how competitive your trade is in your market can move your price.
Do you work with commercial contractors and builders?
Yes, as long as the work is on a property. Construction companies selling to owners, developers and property managers have different buyers and longer decisions, so they have their own page: SEO for construction companies. If you do both homeowner remodels and commercial work, we plan around the work you want more of.
How long does SEO take?
Usually months, not weeks. How fast depends on your competitors and on how complete your Business Profile and site are today.
Do you guarantee rankings?
No. No one can guarantee a spot on Google or in an AI answer. We show you the work and the results.
Is AI SEO extra?
No. AI search optimization is included in SEO in every plan.
Am I locked into a contract?
The first 90 days are committed and billed monthly. After that it's month to month with 30 days' notice.
Who owns my accounts and website?
You do. Every account stays in your name, and website files and copy are yours once paid.
Will you work with my competitor?
No. We won't work with your direct competitor in your area.
Do I need a new website?
Not always. If yours can't turn visits into calls, we'll say so and quote a site separately.
Do you run Google Ads, Local Services Ads or ChatGPT ads?
Case by case. Our plans cover SEO, AI search, your Google Business Profile, reviews and conversion. When paid ads fit your market and goals, we scope Google Ads, Local Services Ads or ChatGPT ads in your proposal. Ad spend goes to the platform and isn't part of our fee.
