What is query fan-out?
Query fan-out is when a single user question is expanded into multiple related sub-queries, each retrieved separately, with the results synthesised into one answer. So a question like “who should I hire to replace my roof” may internally become several searches about cost, materials, timing, local providers and credentials.
What does query fan-out change about how you compete?
Query fan-out means you are no longer competing only for the phrase the user typed. You are competing across the set of sub-questions the system generated, and you may be absent from the answer because you were missing from a sub-query you never considered.
It also rewards topical coverage over single-page optimisation. A site answering the surrounding questions well has more chances to be retrieved.
What do you do about query fan-out?
The work against query fan-out is coverage of the whole question set, not one more page for the phrase itself. Map the questions around the transaction, rather than only the transactional phrase. This is why our topical map treats fan-out queries as a required field before drafting rather than an afterthought.
How do you check your own fan-out coverage?
Take one transactional query you care about and write down every sub-question a careful buyer would need answered before hiring. Then check how many of those have a page on your site. The gaps are where the fan-out is going somewhere else.
Rankings are never guaranteed. Anything we could not trace to a primary source is absent from this page, not estimated. The audit runs the same six layers described on the pricing page, and Share of Answer is scored quarterly.
