What is a zero-click search?
A zero-click search is a search that ends without anyone visiting a website. It resolves on the results page itself, via a featured snippet, an AI Overview, the map pack, or the answer being displayed directly. The searcher gets what they needed without clicking through.
AI Overviews and assistant answers have accelerated this considerably.
Why is a zero-click search not simply bad news?
A zero-click search is not automatically a loss for the business named in it. Traffic is not the only outcome that matters. A zero-click result that shows your business as the recommended option, with your phone number, can produce a call without a single session in analytics.
What it does break is measurement that assumes visibility equals visits. If your only metric is organic sessions, you will read a successful quarter as a failure. The table sets the two outcomes side by side.
| Outcome | What the searcher does | What your analytics records |
|---|---|---|
| Zero-click | Gets what they needed on the results page, from a featured snippet, an AI Overview, the map pack, or the answer being displayed directly. | No session. A call placed from the result never touches the website. |
| Click-through | Follows a link off the results page and lands on your site. | A session, and whatever that session went on to do. |
What should you do about zero-click search?
Zero-click search changes what is worth measuring. Measure presence, rather than only traffic. That is the argument for tracking whether you appear in answers at all, and for treating a call that never touched your website as a real outcome rather than an unattributed anomaly.
How can you check zero-click search for yourself?
Search a question your customers ask and see whether the answer resolves on the results page. Count how far you have to scroll before a website link appears. Then ask whether your business appears anywhere in what resolved above that point.
Rankings are never guaranteed. Anything we could not trace to a primary source is absent from this page, not estimated. The audit runs the same six layers described on the pricing page, and Share of Answer is scored quarterly.
