How often did ChatGPT name Houston's Google Maps leaders?

Once. In our October 2026 study, ChatGPT named 1 of the 24 Houston businesses in the Google Maps top three across eight trades, a water damage company. The 50-metro total was 352 of 1,183. ChatGPT named 4 of 24 local pack businesses, and no Houston business made all three lists.

The two Google lists didn't agree either: only 3 of Houston's 24 Maps leaders were also in the local pack. So in Houston, three different lists of companies came back for the same eight searches. Leading one of them didn't put a business on the other two, and in each of the eight searches, ChatGPT (the OpenAI API with web search, five answers per trade) named at least 12 businesses, no more than 2 of them from either Google list.

Which Houston trades did AI answers name?

Roofing came closest: ChatGPT named 2 of the 3 roofers in Google's local pack, though none of the roofers leading Google Maps. Water damage gave Houston its one named Maps leader. For pest control and remodeling, ChatGPT named no business from either Google list.

Quick answer

What did the seven-trade check find in Houston?

A little more overlap. In a separate check on October 17–18, ChatGPT named 3 of the 21 Houston businesses leading Google Maps in seven more trades: 2 of 3 foundation repair companies and 1 of 3 landscaping companies. It named 5 of 21 local pack businesses, and 9 of the 21 Maps leaders were also in the local pack.

Across the five cities in that check, ChatGPT named 15 of 105 Maps leaders, so Houston's foundation repair result stands out. It's still one day and five answers per trade, reported on its own and not part of our 50-metro study.

What should a Houston plumber's website match on the plumbing board's record?

Texas plumbers are licensed by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners, not by TDLR. Its public license search covers license types such as Responsible Master Plumber, Master Plumber, Journeyman Plumber and Tradesman Plumber-Limited, and the board's own consumer sheet tells homeowners to always hire a licensed plumber.

So assume Houston customers will check. Your site should show the license number and holder exactly as the board's record shows them, on your about page and service pages. Across our study, answers about named plumbers cited a government or licensing site in 1,371 of 1,500 cases. In Houston, ChatGPT named none of the plumbers on either Google list.

Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners site, license types and Public License Search, read November 1, 2026. This isn't legal advice; the board decides what your license covers. Citation counts: what ChatGPT checks before recommending a contractor.

Does a Houston water damage company need a mold record AI tools can find?

If you do mold work, check it. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation's active license search lists mold assessment companies, mold remediation companies and mold remediation contractors. Search your company there under the name on your site. Whether your jobs need that license is TDLR's rule to apply, not ours.

Water damage answers lean on credentials more than most trades. Across our study, answers about named water damage companies cited manufacturer, certification or trade bodies in 931 of 1,500 cases, often the IICRC, and a government or licensing site in 1,243. If your technicians hold IICRC certification, name it on your site the way the certifying body lists it.

TDLR Active License Search, read November 1, 2026. This isn't legal advice. Water damage study results.

Where should a Houston company start?

By checking each list on its own, because in Houston they barely overlapped. Look at where you sit on Google Maps, whether you're in the local pack, and what ChatGPT and Google's AI say for your main searches. Each gap needs different work, and all of it is part of your SEO plan.

Questions about AI search in Houston

Why were Houston's Maps leaders and local pack businesses mostly different?

They're separate Google surfaces: the map results and the map box inside Google's regular results. We captured them separately, and in Houston they shared 3 of 24 businesses, against 431 of 1,184 across all 50 metros. Our study doesn't explain why. For your company, it means checking both lists rather than assuming one tells you the other.

Should a Houston foundation repair company read much into 2 of 3?

Read it as a good sign, not a pattern. It was one search on one day with five answers, in a separate seven-trade check. Across the five cities in that check, ChatGPT named 15 of 105 Maps leaders in total. A single result can change from week to week, so keep your foundation repair pages and records accurate either way.

ChatGPT named no Houston HVAC company from the Maps top three. Is HVAC different?

HVAC looked different everywhere. Across all 50 metros, ChatGPT named 95 of 150 HVAC businesses in the local pack but only 40 of 149 Maps leaders, the widest gap of the eight trades. In Houston it named 1 of 3 pack HVAC companies, and none of the 3 Maps leaders was in the pack. For Houston HVAC, a top Maps spot and an AI mention didn't overlap at all in our check.

Can Houston customers search the TDLR records by area?

Yes. TDLR's active license search can be filtered by city and county as well as by name, license number and license type. Make sure the name and location on your record match your site and Business Profile, so a customer filtering by area finds the company they expect. This isn't legal advice.

Does Houston's 1 of 24 mean AI search doesn't matter here?

No. It means map position didn't carry over to the AI answer. ChatGPT still named Houston companies, just mostly not the ones leading Google's lists: across the eight checks it also gave 12 names we couldn't tie to a single Google listing. Someone is being named for your searches; the question is whether it's you.

How long does SEO take?

Usually months, not weeks. How fast depends on your competitors and on how complete your Business Profile and site are today.

Do you guarantee rankings?

No. No one can guarantee a spot on Google or in an AI answer. We show you the work and the results.

Is AI SEO extra?

No. AI search optimization is included in SEO in every plan.

Am I locked into a contract?

The first 90 days are committed and billed monthly. After that it's month to month with 30 days' notice.

Who owns my accounts and website?

You do. Every account stays in your name, and website files and copy are yours once paid.

Will you work with my competitor?

No. We won't work with your direct competitor in your area.

Do I need a new website?

Not always. If yours can't turn visits into calls, we'll say so and quote a site separately.

Do you run Google Ads, Local Services Ads or ChatGPT ads?

Case by case. Our plans cover SEO, AI search, your Google Business Profile, reviews and conversion. When paid ads fit your market and goals, we scope Google Ads, Local Services Ads or ChatGPT ads in your proposal. Ad spend goes to the platform and isn't part of our fee.
