The belt splits into two cores about 350 miles apart
This unit was mapped as a marketing benchmark. The dataset behind it contains nothing about marketing, so it ships as a storm-exposure compilation instead, alongside the rest of the research and data we publish, and the section at the end lists every commercial claim these data refuse to carry.
The phrase “the Texas hail belt” appears constantly in roofing marketing and is almost never defined. We downloaded the NOAA NCEI Storm Events Database for 2015 through 2024, filtered to Texas hail, and counted distinct hail days for every county in the state. 12,619 reports resolved to 5,669 distinct county hail days across 253 of the 254 counties.
The popular framing is a coherent corridor running down the middle of the state. The distribution does not show one. It shows two spatially separate high-frequency cores with a genuine gap between them, plus a third more diffuse zone to the west.
Where the hail days actually concentrate
Core one is the Panhandle. Seventeen of the top sixty counties sit in a contiguous block roughly between 34.5 and 36.5 degrees north: Potter at 70 distinct hail days, Carson 64, Randall 61, Hutchinson 57, Gray 57, Deaf Smith 45, Ochiltree 44, Moore 42, Lipscomb 42, Dallam 42.
Core two is DFW and North Texas, about 350 miles southeast: Tarrant at 80, Denton 77, Dallas 61, Collin 57, Grayson 50, Wise 39, Johnson 38, Parker 36.
Between them lies the eastern Rolling Plains and the Red River valley, running 20 to 35 days rather than 55 to 80. The gap is real and survives any threshold you pick. A third zone, west central Texas around Taylor at 52, Tom Green 49, Jones 46 and Coleman 45, is more diffuse than either core.
If you want one sentence the data support: the Texas hail zone covers the Panhandle, the South Plains, west central Texas and the DFW block, broadly everything north of about 30 degrees and west of about 96 degrees, with two maxima rather than one corridor. Concentration is moderate. The top ten counties hold 11.5% of all county hail days and it takes 127 counties, half the state, to reach 74.6%.
Report counts partly measure population
The unit here is the Distinct county hail day: a unique pairing of county and calendar date on which hail was reported. That choice is not cosmetic, and the reason is measurable.
The database logs one row per report. Texas ran 2.23 reports per county hail day over the decade, and a single statewide hail date averaged 13.98 reports. Anyone quoting 12,619 Texas hailstorms in ten years is overstating by a factor of two at best.
More to the point, raw report counts track population. Across Texas counties, reports per hail day correlate with 2024 population at a Spearman rho of 0.524. Distinct hail days correlate at 0.135. The twenty most populous counties average 3.37 reports per hail day; the twenty least populous average 1.66. Report counts partly measure how many people were there to see it. Distinct days largely do not, which is why every table here uses them.
The confirming case is Carson County, population 5,822, which ranks fifth in Texas on distinct hail days. The Panhandle signal is weather rather than observer density.

Across all 253 counties with any hail, the median is 20 distinct hail days in ten years, or about two a year. The top county is only four times the median. 133 counties recorded 20 days or more and 28 recorded 40 or more.
Pecos County is large before it is hail-prone
One entry in that table is an artefact and we would rather flag it than let it stand. Pecos County ranks fourth on raw distinct days and is the largest county in Texas at 4,764 square miles. Normalised for area it falls to 13.6 hail days per thousand square miles, near the bottom of the top forty.
On the area-normalised measure the leaders are Rockwall at 102.2 days per thousand square miles, Tarrant at 92.4, Denton 87.6, Potter 77.1, Dallas 69.9 and Carson 69.5. Rockwall’s position rests on 13 hail days across 127 square miles and is thin enough to treat with caution.
Two counties with the same hail-day count can be different markets
Frequency and severity are different markets, and separating them changes the ranking. A county with many small-hail days is a different proposition from one with fewer large-hail days.

Pecos is the most severe profile in the state: every one of its 65 hail days involved hail of an inch or more, and 36.9% reached two inches. Grayson recorded no three-inch day at all in the decade. Tarrant holds the most hail days in Texas and the lowest severe share of the DFW group. Statewide, 4,891 county hail days reached one inch and 1,052 reached two, so roof-damaging hail is common and roof-destroying hail is not.
DFW and the Panhandle run different calendars
Statewide, March through June accounts for 85.0% of all Texas county hail days, and May alone accounts for 36.3%. That statewide figure hides a regional offset large enough to matter.
DFW peaks in March and April and has a real tail through the year. Tarrant County recorded hail in all twelve months. The Panhandle and west Texas peak in May and June and have almost no late-winter hail at all. Pecos County recorded zero hail days in January, February, March, November and December across the entire decade. Potter County has a secondary August peak that DFW does not share.
A single Texas hail season does not exist. DFW’s starts roughly two months earlier than the Panhandle’s and ends later.

Houston is a high-frequency, small-hail market: 53 dates with hail of an inch or more and six with two inches. Montgomery County recorded no two-inch day in ten years. The Permian Basin runs the opposite profile, producing 24 severe dates from two counties against Houston’s six from three. On a per-county basis Lubbock’s 58 days beat Dallas, Collin and Ellis.
First in absolute terms, last of five per square mile
The last question is whether Texas actually leads on hail. We ran the identical computation on Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska.
Texas leads on the raw total by a wide margin, at 4,891 county days with a report of an inch or more. Controlled for size, Texas ranks last of the five. Per thousand square miles: Kansas 35.1, Nebraska 32.3, Oklahoma 27.2, Texas 18.7, Colorado 12.6. Per county: Kansas 27.3, Nebraska 26.7, Oklahoma 24.3, Colorado 20.3, Texas 19.3. Kansas runs 1.9 times the hail-day density of Texas, and Texas is also last on severe-hail density.
Individual counties make the same point. Colorado’s El Paso County recorded 122 days with hail of an inch or more and Weld County 92. Texas’s best, Pecos at 65 and Tarrant at 64, would rank third in Colorado.
The defensible sentence is that Texas records more hail than any other state in absolute terms because it is enormous, and that per square mile Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma all see more.
The reports-per-day ratio held steady across all five states, from 2.00 in Nebraska to 2.84 in Colorado. The inflation of raw counts is how the database works rather than a Texas quirk.
Volatile rather than rising
County hail days by year ran 599, 619, 586, 413, 647, 474, 532, 364, 760 and 675 from 2015 to 2024. The biggest year was 2023 and the smallest 2022, a ratio of 2.09 to one. A Texas roofing market can see twice the hail exposure in one year against another.
Fitting a line to that series gives a slope of 4.52 days a year at p = 0.758 and an R squared of 0.013. Statewide hail dates give p = 0.498. Neither is distinguishable from zero. Ten years of this database do not support a claim that Texas hail is increasing or decreasing. They support a claim that it is volatile.
No state licence, and an appraisal rule still in rulemaking
Wider market conditions for the state, including permitting and code adoption, sit on the Texas market page. Texas does not license roofing contractors. There is no state licence, no state registration and no state bonding requirement to sell or perform roofing work. The Department of Licensing and Regulation’s own list of regulated industries covers air conditioning, electricians, elevators, water wells and others, and does not include roofing. The 89th Legislature considered House Bill 3344 in 2025, which would have created a licensing scheme under a new Occupations Code chapter; its last action was a committee report sent to Calendars on 8 May 2025 and it never reached a floor vote. The Roofing Contractors Association of Texas runs a voluntary programme with examinations and insurance requirements, which is an association credential rather than a government licence.
Appraisal changed recently and the change is still landing. Senate Bill 458 of the 2025 regular session added Insurance Code Chapter 1813, requiring an appraisal provision in every covered residential property policy and making the appraised amount binding except for fraud, accident, material mistake or want of authority. It took effect 1 September 2025 and applies to policies delivered, issued or renewed on or after 1 January 2026. The Department of Insurance has proposed implementing rules at 28 TAC sections 5.9800 through 5.9806, published 8 May 2026 with a hearing held 2 June 2026, and as of 28 July 2026 they have not been adopted. Anyone describing those deadlines as binding is ahead of the rulemaking.
Deductibles. House Bill 2102 of 2019 added Insurance Code Chapter 707 requiring the policyholder to pay any applicable deductible, allowing an insurer to withhold recoverable depreciation until it receives reasonable proof of payment, and rewriting Business and Commerce Code section 27.02 to make it a Class B misdemeanour to advertise or promise to waive, absorb, rebate or otherwise help a policyholder avoid paying it. Contracts of $1,000 or more expected to be paid from insurance proceeds must carry a specified notice in 12-point boldface. A 2023 attempt to tighten it, Senate Bill 1268, was left pending in committee, so the 2019 law is what operates.
Matching is not a Texas statutory entitlement. We looked for a statute or adopted rule requiring replacement of undamaged adjacent materials for uniform appearance and found none. In Texas this is a policy-language and claim-handling question. The Department of Insurance describes roof payment through the replacement-cost against actual-cash-value distinction rather than any matching mandate.
What this data cannot support
This dataset is a record of meteorological observations. It contains no commercial fields at all, and the following claims cannot be sourced to it by anyone, including us.
- Lead cost, cost per lead or cost per acquisition in any county or metro. Not present and not derivable.
- Conversion rates, close rates or canvassing efficiency. Nothing in the file relates to sales activity.
- Search demand or advertising seasonality. A May hail peak is a weather fact. The lag between a hail day and a homeowner searching for a roofer is not measured here.
- Contractor counts or market saturation. Not present, and Texas has no state roofing registry to derive them from.
- Claim counts, approval rates or average payout. A hail report is a weather observation rather than a claim, and there is no join between this file and any insurer’s book.
- Number of roofs damaged, or damage dollars, from any hail day. The damage field in the source is a coarse field-office estimate for a whole event and is not a roof-damage measure.
- Whether a specific address or ZIP code was hit. A county hail day means hail was reported somewhere in that county on that date.
- Anything about 2025 or 2026. The window closes on 31 December 2024.
- Absence of hail as evidence of safety. Calhoun County’s zero is a reporting zero. Lightly populated counties under-report, and the database records what someone observed and relayed.

Where is the Texas hail belt?
On ten years of NOAA records there is no single belt. The high-frequency zone splits into two cores about 350 miles apart: the Panhandle, led by Potter, Carson and Randall counties, and DFW and North Texas, led by Tarrant, Denton, Dallas and Collin. A third more diffuse zone runs through west central Texas. The counties between the two cores run 20 to 35 hail days rather than 55 to 80.
Which Texas county gets the most hail?
Tarrant County, at 80 distinct hail days from 2015 to 2024. On severity rather than frequency the answer changes: Pecos County saw hail of an inch or more on every one of its 65 hail days and reached two inches on 36.9% of them, the most severe profile in the state.
Is Texas the worst hail state in America?
In raw totals, yes. Per square mile, no. Texas recorded 4,891 county hail days at an inch or more, more than any other state tested, but that works out to 18.7 per thousand square miles against Kansas at 35.1, Nebraska at 32.3 and Oklahoma at 27.2. Texas ranks last of the five plains states on both area and per-county normalisation.
Is Texas hail getting worse?
These data do not show it. Fitting a trend to county hail days across the decade gives p = 0.758, which is not distinguishable from zero. What the record does show is volatility: 2023 produced 760 county hail days and 2022 produced 364.
Do I need a licence to do roofing work in Texas?
Not from the state. Texas has no roofing contractor licence, registration or bonding requirement at state level, and a 2025 bill to create one died in committee. Municipal permitting and local registration still apply and vary by city. The Roofing Contractors Association of Texas runs a voluntary programme, which carries no legal force.
