Plumbing marketing ideas beyond buying leads: 5, ranked

By Youssef Hodaigui, Mindflow Marketing · Last reviewed November 1, 2026

The plumbing marketing ideas with the strongest plumbing-specific evidence are keeping your newest Google review only days old and knowing what Reddit threads say about your company. After those come three ideas built on rules that create plumbing work: lead service line replacement, sewer camera inspections for home buyers and backflow testing.

We ranked these by plumbing evidence: our October 2026 study of plumbing companies in 50 US metros first, then a federal rule, an inspection standard and local rules, ordered by how widely each one applies. None of these can promise more calls, a ranking or an AI mention.

Why do only two plumbing ideas rest on our study?

Because the plumbing leads guide uses most of our plumbing figures. Two it doesn't use rank first: how fresh plumbers' reviews are, and how often AI answers about named plumbers cite Reddit. We have no plumbing data on the other three, so they're ordered by how widely each applies, from a federal rule to rules set by each water system.

The two study-backed ideas come from our October 2026 check of 50 US metros: plumbers at the top of Google Maps and in the local pack, the companies ChatGPT named when asked "Which plumbing companies in [City], [State] should a homeowner call?", and about 750 plumbing companies asked about by name, with their Google reviews. The figures show associations in one period, not causes.

What the study can't rank: demand for lead line, sewer scope or backflow work, because we didn't pull search estimates for those jobs. Of the seven plumbing marketing pages we read on November 1, 2026, none mentioned AI answers, forums, lead service lines, backflow testing or sewer scopes.

1. Keep your newest Google review days old, not weeks

Plumbing reviews arrive faster than in almost any other trade. As published on our plumbing data page, the median plumbing business had 10 new Google reviews in 30 days, and its newest review was 2 days old. Only HVAC was fresher, at 1 day; pest control matched plumbing.

Our plumbing leads guide shows the plumbers ChatGPT named among Maps leaders running far ahead of the ones it skipped on new reviews. That's an association, not proof, and Google itself says only that "More reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking."

How to keep the date fresh:

  • Check the date of your newest review every Friday. If it's more than a week old, find where the request stopped: a tech who skips it, a text that isn't sending, a template that broke.
  • Tie the request to the job record, so the office can see which closed jobs never got one.
  • Ask every customer, the drain call as much as the repipe, with nothing offered in return. What Google allows when you ask is in our guide on how to get more Google reviews.
  • Answer new reviews while they're new. Our guide on how to respond to reviews on Google has wording that works.

2. Find out what Reddit threads say about your company

Forum threads come up often when ChatGPT checks a named plumber. Asked about 750 plumbing companies by name, its 1,500 answers cited Reddit in 319, second only to HVAC, with 366, among the eight trades we studied. An old thread about one bad job can be part of what an answer reads about you, long after you fixed it.

Source: Mindflow research, OpenAI API with web search, October 3–17, 2026; two answers each about 750 plumbing businesses in 50 metros. Counts the links attached to each answer, not every page the tool read. How the study was done.

What to do with it:

  • Search your company name with "reddit" and your city once a month, and keep a list of threads that mention you.
  • If you reply, say who you are. The FTC's rule on reviews, in force since October 21, 2024, bans fake reviews and expects insiders who review a business to "clearly and conspicuously disclose their relationship." Hold forum replies to the same standard: your name, your company, the facts and an offer to put it right.
  • Never post as a customer, or ask staff or family to. On Google Maps, its policy also bars reviews from people with a conflict of interest, which "may include current or former employment."
  • Read each community's posted rules first, since many limit what businesses may post.

This isn't legal advice. Who controls what turns up for your company's name is covered in who owns your name search.

3. Build a lead service line page for the utilities you serve

Federal rules now put a date on lead pipe removal. EPA's Lead and Copper Rule Improvements say water systems "must replace lead and GRR service lines under their control within 10 years." The rule's compliance date is November 1, 2027, so most systems must finish by November 1, 2037; some states can set shorter or deferred deadlines.

GRR means galvanized requiring replacement. Homeowners on those lines will hear about it from their utility. EPA requires an inventory that lists each lead and GRR line by location, posted online by systems serving more than 50,000 people, plus a yearly notice to people served by a lead, GRR or unknown line. Replacement plans are due to the state by the compliance date. Who pays for the owner's side differs: EPA notes that some systems need the owner's consent, and some require owners to pay.

Sources: EPA, LCRI rule comparison guide (October 2024) and LCRI Service Line Replacement Access – Tips (August 2026); Louisiana Department of Health, LCRI FAQs (May 21, 2026), for the dates; read November 1, 2026. A summary, not legal advice.

  • Read the inventories of the water systems in your service area, and note which towns have lead, GRR or unknown lines.
  • Ask each utility how its program works: whether it replaces the owner's side, uses approved contractors, or leaves that part to the owner.
  • Write one page that covers the utilities you serve, with a section for each: what the notice means, what the owner's part may be, and how you quote it. Link to each utility's own page, and never tell a homeowner they have lead before you've checked.

4. Sell the sewer camera inspection a home inspection leaves out

The sewer line sits outside what a home inspection has to cover. InterNACHI's standards don't list the sewer line in their plumbing section, and they say inspectors aren't required to inspect "underground utilities" or "underground items." A buyer who wants the line checked before closing needs someone with a sewer camera, and a plumber can also quote the repair.

Source: InterNACHI, Home Inspection Standards of Practice, sections 3.2 and 3.6 (revised October 2022), read November 1, 2026. Some states set their own inspection standards.

  • Build a sewer camera inspection page for home buyers: what you check, how long it takes, what the written report includes and how fast it arrives.
  • Introduce it to buyer's agents and home inspectors as the check the standard inspection doesn't include. Paying agents or inspectors for referrals may be restricted where you work, so check first. This isn't legal advice.
  • Keep the footage and the repair quote separate. Give the buyer the video and a plain summary, and quote any repair on its own, so the inspection stays credible.

5. Remind every customer with a backflow assembly before the test is due

Backflow testing is recurring work set by local rules. In Bellingham, Washington, for example, the city tells water customers "to have testing performed annually," says "Only State of Washington certified Backflow Assembly Tester (BAT) can perform the test," and sends reminder notices. Wherever a rule like that applies, every property with an assembly needs a tester each year.

Source: City of Bellingham, Cross-Connection Control Testing Questions and Answers (updated March 12, 2026), read November 1, 2026. Rules differ by state and water system; check yours.

  • Find each utility's rules: how often assemblies are tested, who may test them, and whether a list of certified testers is published. In Washington, a state certification body keeps the official list.
  • Get certified and listed where your utility publishes testers, so property managers find you when the notice arrives.
  • Keep a test-due list from your own records and remind each customer before the date, instead of waiting for the utility's notice to send them shopping.

Which outside calendars should a plumbing marketing plan follow?

Three of these ideas run on someone else's dates, so a plumbing marketing plan starts with them: the utility's lead line program, the backflow test cycle and the home buyer's inspection window. Your own week covers the rest, with the review check and the forum search. The table lines them up.

Where did emergency calls, ads and social media go?

Emergency calls, ads and lead buying are on our plumbing leads guide, with our data. Social media, email, flyers and truck wraps are left out because we have no plumbing measurements for them: social appeared on all seven plumbing marketing pages we read, email on six, flyers or mail on three and wraps on two.

Already getting water heater or repipe jobs from one of them? Then it has earned its place; measure its cost per booked job the same way as the ideas here. Utility fixture rebates are worth a line on your toilet and faucet quotes where a program exists; EPA's WaterSense rebate finder lists them, but they don't make a marketing idea of their own. Frequently asked questions

Can a plumber reply to a Reddit thread about their own company? Yes, if you're open about who you are. Reply under your own name, say you own or work for the company, stick to facts and offer to fix the problem. Never post as a customer or ask staff to. The FTC's review rule expects insiders to disclose their relationship, and each forum sets its own rules. This isn't legal advice.

Who pays to replace a lead service line? It depends on the water system. EPA's rule gives systems until November 1, 2037 in most cases to replace lead and galvanized-requiring-replacement lines under their control, but EPA's own guidance notes that some systems require the property owner's consent and some require owners to pay. Ask each utility in your area how its program handles the owner's side before you quote.

Does a home inspection include the sewer line? Usually not as standard. The standards of practice published by InterNACHI, a home inspector association, don't list the sewer line and don't require inspectors to check underground utilities. Check what your local inspectors include. A plumber with a sewer camera can offer buyers the check on its own, with video and a written summary.

How recent should a plumber's newest Google review be? Days, not weeks. As published in our research, the median plumbing business's newest review was 2 days old, and it had 10 new reviews in 30 days. If your newest review is more than a week old, find where the request step stopped. Ask every customer, from your own system, with nothing offered in return.

Who is allowed to test backflow devices? Your state or water system decides. In Bellingham, Washington, for example, only a state-certified backflow assembly tester may perform the annual test, and the city keeps customers on a reminder cycle. Check your utility's cross-connection program for the interval, the certification it accepts and whether it publishes a list of testers.
