Does ChatGPT name the window companies at the top of the map?
Rarely. In our 5-city study (October 2026), five ChatGPT runs per city that named no company named 1 of the 15 window replacement businesses in Google's Maps top three and 7 of the 15 in the local pack. Most of those runs cited a maker's, certification or franchise brand's site.
| City | Maps top three named | Local pack named | Businesses named (5 runs) |
|---|
| Atlanta | 1 of 3 | 3 of 3 | 18 |
| Austin | 0 of 3 | 2 of 3 | 21 |
| Charlotte | 0 of 3 | 1 of 3 | 16 |
| Houston | 0 of 3 | 1 of 3 | 24 |
| San Antonio | 0 of 3 | 0 of 3 | 19 |
| Five cities | 1 of 15 | 7 of 15 | 98 (city counts added) |
Source: Mindflow research, our 5-city study (October 2026): search "window replacement" in Atlanta, Austin, Charlotte, Houston and San Antonio, collected October 18, 2026; OpenAI API with web search; five ChatGPT runs per city that named no company, and a business counts as named if it appeared in at least one run; plus 150 ChatGPT answers about named window replacement companies. Reported separately from our 50-metro study, which covers eight other trades. How we ran our research.
Across those 25 runs, a window maker's, certification or trade-body site was cited in 24, a franchise brand's site in 21 and the BBB in 11. In 150 ChatGPT answers about named window replacement companies, the BBB was cited in 147, the company's own site in 127, a government or licensing site in 101 and a maker or certification site in 32.
What this means for you: when a homeowner asks an AI tool who to call, a local company is up against makers and franchise brands whose sites cover many markets. What you control is your own record: a site that says which products you install and where, certifications stated accurately, a BBB profile and license record that match, and reviews from your towns. When the homeowner then asks about you by name, those are the places the answers checked. More in what ChatGPT checks before recommending a contractor.
