General contractors

General Contractor PPC

General contractor PPC is paid search for builders who run whole projects: additions, garages, structural work and renovations that pull in several trades. Your work crosses more of Google's ad categories than most trades, and in some states every ad must carry your license number. Mindflow takes on ads case by case. When paid ads fit your market and goals, we scope Google Ads, Local Services Ads or ChatGPT ads in your proposal, inside the same program as your SEO, Business Profile, reviews and conversion work.

Which Local Services categories fit a general contractor?

"General contractor" is one Local Services category in the US, but your work also sits in others, such as Kitchen remodeling, Roofers, Siding services and Handyman. Google treats each as a separate industry in your account, with its own job types and verification steps. Add the categories for work you want more of, not everything you can do.

Work you'd advertiseGoogle's Local Services categoryBefore you add it
Additions, garages, whole-house projectsGeneral contractorYour core category; choose its job types with care
Kitchens and bathroomsKitchen remodeling, Bathroom remodelingCovered on remodeling PPC
Roofs and sidingRoofers, Siding servicesYour state may license these trades separately
Floors, trim and built-insFlooring services, Carpenters, Countertop servicesOnly if your own crews do the work
Small repairsHandymanBrings small jobs; skip it if you don't want them

For General contractor, Google's checks cover the business and its owner, business registration, a business representative, general liability insurance, and state business and owner licenses "where applicable by local law," each for select users. Google opts every category into general searches by default; turning that off applies to all your categories at once.

Local Services Ads are also moving into Google Ads: select home and storefront advertisers in Google's named categories from August 2026, service-area businesses without storefronts in late 2026 and the rest in 2027. General contractor is not named in the first group. Google moves an account's entire setup at once and then closes its old dashboard. After the move, Google Ads doesn't support a target per category: a campaign that had different targets per category gets one campaign-level target, and Google suggests "setting up separate campaigns for each vertical" if you bid differently. Does a general contractor's ad need a license number?

In some states, every ad does. Nevada's statute says "all advertising by a licensed contractor must include" the company name and license number, and it counts the internet as advertising. North Carolina shows how rules change: its 2018 rule named advertisements, but the rule in force now names contracts and bids. Not legal advice.

StateThe rule as read November 1, 2026What it means for search ads
NevadaNRS 624.720: all advertising must include the company name and license number; "advertising" includes internet and directory listings. After a hearing, the board can order a person to stop unlawful advertising and have the listed phone numbers disconnected; fines run $1,000 to $50,000 per violation (NRS 624.710)The number belongs in every ad, and the tracking number in an unlawful ad is at risk too
North Carolina21 NCAC 12A .0501(a): "License numbers shall be included on all contracts and bids." The version effective April 1, 2018 read "License numbers shall be included on all contracts, advertisements, and licensee websites"; amendments effective September 1, 2019 and January 1, 2022 changed itAdvertisements aren't named in the current text; ask the board before relying on either version
California, Florida, ArizonaEach requires the number in advertising; Arizona lets broadcast, internet and billboard ads carry a web address that links directly to a site prominently showing your name and license number insteadSee our construction advertising guide

If your state wants the number in every ad, one headline out of fifteen won't do it. Google says headlines and descriptions "may appear in any order," and only text pinned to Headline 1, Headline 2 or Description 1 always shows. Whether the number on your landing page is enough depends on the state: Arizona's statute exempts internet ads whose web address links directly to a site that prominently shows your name and license number; elsewhere, ask your board.

Google's own Local Services rules matter for a contractor who subcontracts. You "may only accept the type of work that you are licensed, insured, and able to complete," and "cannot use the license of a person who does not work for their business." Homeowners check licenses too; see contractor license lookup.

How do you keep general contractor ads away from the wrong searches?

With a negative keyword list built before launch. "General contractor" searches mix homeowners with job seekers, people studying for a license exam, subcontractors looking for work and businesses with commercial projects. Google says negative keywords "won't match to close variants," so "job" and "jobs" each need their own entry.

Search you'll seeWho's searchingWhat to do

The term is loose on the map too. In our 5-city study, many businesses Google Maps listed for "general contractor" were categorized as remodelers, custom home builders or cabinet makers; the full finding is on our general contractor marketing page. Match types are explained in our Google Ads handbook.

Google: about negative keywords, read November 1, 2026. Study: Mindflow research, 5-city study (Atlanta, Austin, Charlotte, Houston and San Antonio), October 17–18, 2026, reported separately from our 50-metro study.

When do ads make sense for a general contractor?

When you have crew time to fill in the next few months, a page for each project type you'd advertise, and a way to see which estimate requests became signed projects. Projects can take weeks to sign, so judge a campaign over that span, not in its first few days.

Good signs:

  • Open weeks ahead, in towns you can name, for project types you want.
  • A project page per type, with your own photos; our contractor website design page shows what goes on one.
  • Same-day follow-up on every estimate request.

Not yet:

  • Your license number or business name differs between your site, your Business Profile and your state record.
  • No way to match requests to signed projects.Count signed work by project type, and import it into Google Ads where you can.
  • You want ads to replace referrals.Paid clicks sit alongside them; our lead quality vs lead volume guide covers the trade-off.

What should a general contractor ask before hiring anyone to run ads?

Ask about the accounts, the categories and the license wording before anything goes live. Of seven contractor PPC agency pages we read on November 1, 2026, none said who owns the ad account or stated contract terms, none mentioned license-number rules, and two still used the retired "Google Guaranteed" name.

AskWhat to listen for
Which project types get their own campaign and page? Each type you want more of, so cost per signed project shows by type
Which Local Services categories go on, and why?Only the work you want more of, split into campaigns where your targets differ
How will the license number show in every ad, if our state requires it?A clear answer that names your state's rule

Case study

Case study: a fence company, from one county to Metro Atlanta

The problem

"we struggled to generate consistent leads online and were invisible in search results."

The work

SEO and web design over an 8-year partnership, plus reputation management.

The results Zack Goekjian (CEO) describes in his testimonial
  • "Within the first year, our website started ranking for competitive keywords like 'Atlanta fence installation' and 'Atlanta fence company'"
  • 250% more qualified leads
  • from 1 county to several across Metro Atlanta
  • from 5 people to 12
  • reputation work that helped maintain a 4.9-star average rating.

These are Zack's own figures from his testimonial, not numbers we measured. Results depend on your market and starting point.

Questions about general contractor PPC

How many wrong-fit estimate requests can one signed project carry?
Work it out before launch: your profit on a typical project, divided by the requests it takes to sign one, is the most a request can cost. With few, large jobs, a month of wrong-fit requests can use the budget before one project signs, so judge cost per signed project, not per click. Clicks are priced by auction, and Google bills the spend to you.
Can we advertise trades our subcontractors perform?
In Local Services, Google's policies say you may only accept work you're "licensed, insured, and able to complete" and can't use the license of someone who doesn't work for your business. In Google Ads search campaigns, your state's licensing law decides what you can offer. Ask your board or attorney before advertising a trade you don't hold a license for. Not legal advice.
Should commercial and residential work share a campaign?
No. The searches differ, the budgets differ, and the landing page a business owner needs isn't the one a homeowner needs. Run them as separate campaigns with their own pages, or exclude commercial searches if you don't build commercial. Builders and commercial contractors have their own page: marketing for construction companies.
Is this different from remodeling PPC?
Yes. If most of your work is kitchens and bathrooms, remodeling PPC covers Google's separate kitchen and bathroom categories, long sign times and financing lines in ads. This page is for contractors who run multi-trade projects such as additions, garages and whole-house work, where the category spread and license rules matter most.
How long does SEO take?
Usually months, not weeks. How fast depends on your competitors and on how complete your Business Profile and site are today.
Do you guarantee rankings?
No. No one can guarantee a spot on Google or in an AI answer. We show you the work and the results.
Is AI SEO extra?
No. AI search optimization is included in SEO in every plan.
Am I locked into a contract?
The first 90 days are committed and billed monthly. After that it's month to month with 30 days' notice.
Who owns my accounts and website?
You do. Every account stays in your name, and website files and copy are yours once paid.
Will you work with my competitor?
No. We won't work with your direct competitor in your area.
Do I need a new website?
Not always. If yours can't turn visits into calls, we'll say so and quote a site separately.
Do you run Google Ads, Local Services Ads or ChatGPT ads?
Case by case. Our plans cover SEO, AI search, your Google Business Profile, reviews and conversion. When paid ads fit your market and goals, we scope Google Ads, Local Services Ads or ChatGPT ads in your proposal. Ad spend goes to the platform and isn't part of our fee.
