Electrician PPC: Google Ads and Local Services Ads for Electrical Contractors

Panel upgrades, EV chargers and generators are where ads earn their keep for an electrician: Google Ads charges per click, Local Services Ads per lead, and either can put you in front of a homeowner searching for that job today. Mindflow handles ads case by case. When paid ads fit your market and goals, we scope Google Ads, Local Services Ads or ChatGPT ads in your proposal, together with our SEO program.

When do ads make sense for an electrical contractor?

Ads make the most sense for planned jobs that pay for the leads behind them: panel upgrades, EV chargers, generators and rewiring. A small repair earns far less than a panel upgrade, and Local Services Ads charge per lead either way. So decide which jobs you want before deciding on a budget.

Good signs:

  • A clear target job, with crews and permits you can schedule, in towns you can name.
  • A page for that job that answers what the buyer asks first: what's included, permits, timing, financing if you offer it.
  • Your license is easy to verify, on your site and on your Business Profile, under the same business name.

Not yet:

  • Every lead is a light switch. If you can't keep small jobs out through your settings, a lead-priced ad can fill your schedule with work that barely pays.
  • The phone goes unanswered on job sites.Google says missed calls may count against your responsiveness, which feeds Local Services ranking.

Does an electrician's ad need a license number?

In some states, yes, and Texas spells it out: all advertising by electrical contracting companies "designed to solicit electrical business shall include the electrical contractor's name and license number." Exceptions are narrow, and none names search ads. Check your own state's rule first. Not legal advice.

What Texas rule 16 TAC §73.51(e) allows without the number:

  • TV ads placed nationwide that say license numbers are available on request.
  • Phone-book listings with only a name, address and phone number, and manufacturers' or distributors' trade ads naming a contractor.
  • Phone solicitations, if the caller states the contractor complies with state licensing and gives the number on request.
  • Promotional items of nominal value, such as caps and T-shirts, and signs at your permanent business location.

Search ads and websites aren't on the list, and a search ad's headlines leave little room. Ask the state, or your attorney, how the rule applies to each ad format you run; putting the name and number on the landing page is the simple part. Other states' contractor rules are in our construction advertising guide.

How does Google check an electrician's license for Local Services Ads?

Google validates state licenses against state databases and shows the checks you've passed on your profile. Electrical is one of Google's urgent categories, so where Google requires checks (it marks them for select users), every worker who performs your core services, including independent contractors, is background-checked along with business and owner checks. There's no fee for the checks.

What that means in practice:

  • Match the names.Keep your license, your Business Profile and your Local Services account under the same business name. Google ties Local Services to a public, verified Business Profile.
  • Your customers can see it.The Google Verified badge replaced Google Guaranteed, and verified profiles list your completed checks. See our Google Verified definition and our contractor license lookup entry.
  • It isn't one and done.Every new electrician who goes to customers' homes needs a background check. Google says advertisers are regularly re-evaluated; once an account has moved into Google Ads, insurance and license reverification are no longer required, though Google may still ask for business-level checks.

The account itself is changing too. Electrical contractors are in the opening phase of Google's LSA migration into Google Ads, beginning with selected storefront businesses in August 2026, then service-area electricians late in 2026 and every other account during 2027. Leads stay pay-per-lead and your badge and passed checks carry over, but the old dashboard closes, budgets switch from weekly to a daily average and manual per-lead bidding stops. Our Local Services Ads page walks through the move.

Should panel, EV charger and generator jobs have their own ads?

Yes, if you want more of each. They're different buyers with different budgets, and each needs its own page and its own budget. With Search, give each job its own campaign. With Local Services Ads, job types are toggled per industry, so turn on only the work you want.

SettingWhat Google saysWhy it matters for an electrician
Job types (Local Services; service types after the move)Toggle on the job types that apply to your businessLeave small jobs you don't want switched off
CreditsNo credits for "job type not serviced" or "geo not serviced" leadsA wrong-job lead you left switched on is yours to pay for
Broad search (Local Services)Turning it off "may result in a decrease in leads"Fewer leads can be the right trade if they're the right jobs
Search campaignsEach campaign has its own average daily budgetGive each job its own campaign and page, and you see what a booked panel upgrade costs, apart from repairs

Planned electrical jobs often take longer to close than an emergency call, so judge a panel or generator campaign over weeks, by estimates and booked jobs, not by the first few days of clicks. Campaign settings are in our Google Ads handbook.

When should electrical ad budgets move?

Rarely on a fixed date. US electrical searches peaked in December 2023, July 2024 and January 2025, and in each year the busiest month was less than twice the quietest. For most electricians, a steady budget set by job type beats a seasonal push.

Year (US)Busiest monthQuietest monthBusiest ÷ quietest
2023DecemberFebruary and April (tied)About 1.2
2024JulyFebruaryAbout 1.8
2025JanuaryNovemberAbout 1.9

If you sell generators, watch your own search terms and booked jobs after major outages rather than the national line. Some cities' patterns are on our electrician marketing page; the peak for each of 49 metros is in when home-service demand peaks.

Source: Mindflow research, Google Ads search-volume estimates for "electrician" and "electrical repair" combined, US, by calendar month, 2023 to 2025; the same data as when home-service demand peaks. Google rounds these estimates, so close months can swap places. Searches aren't booked jobs.

What should an electrician ask before hiring anyone to run ads?

Ask who owns the accounts, which jobs the ads will target and how your license shows up. Of seven electrician PPC agency pages we read on November 1, 2026, four treated a license as a trust badge for ad copy, but none mentioned a state rule requiring the license number, and only one said clients own their ad accounts.

AskWhat to listen for
Which jobs will the ads target first? The ones you name, each with its own campaign and page
How will our license name and number appear? The way your state requires, on the ads and pages it covers
How will small jobs be kept out?Job types switched off, negative keywords and a page that states what you do
How long before a panel or generator campaign is judged?Weeks, by estimates and booked jobs, not the first few days of clicks
Will commercial and residential searches run apart?Separate campaigns sent to separate pages, so you can see which books work

If an agency set up your account under its own login, or you want the ownership and billing questions for any hire, our Google Ads handbook covers them.

Quick answer

How does Mindflow handle ads for an electrical contractor?

Case by case. When paid ads fit your market and goals, we scope Google Ads, Local Services Ads or ChatGPT ads in your proposal, next to the SEO, Business Profile, review and conversion work in our program. You own every account. What you spend on ads goes to the platform, not to us.

A panel or EV charger ad also needs a page for that job. No one can promise leads or rankings from ads, and we don't. The program side is on SEO for electricians; how ads fit with it is on our PPC overview.

The free AI Visibility Review shows the gaps in your Business Profile and compares your reviews with your top three competitors: the same profile and reviews your Local Services listing uses. It doesn't audit ad accounts.

Questions about electrician PPC

Should a generator lead and a repair lead get the same budget?
No. A standby generator install and a breaker repair differ in what the job earns and in how often a lead turns into one, so give each its own campaign and budget, sized from your own sold-job records. Google prices Search clicks by auction, and a month's charges can't exceed 30.4 times the daily budget. If ads fit, they're scoped in your proposal; ad spend goes to Google.
Does Google show our license on the ad?
On your Local Services profile, yes, once verified: Google validates state licenses against state databases and calls out completed checks on verified profiles. Google says the badge may also appear on other surfaces, but it doesn't promise a badge or license line on standard Search ads, so any license number there, or on the landing page, is up to you and your state's rules.
Should we advertise to commercial customers too?
Only with separate campaigns and pages. A property manager or builder compares on licensing, past projects and capacity, not on how fast you can reach a house tonight. Mixing commercial and residential searches in one campaign makes it hard to see which one books work, or what each costs.
Can ads replace word of mouth for an electrician?
No, and they don't need to. Referrals often end in a search for your company name, so your Business Profile, reviews and license details have to hold up when someone looks. Ads add reach for the jobs you choose; they don't replace a good name. Our electrical leads guide compares lead sources.
How long does SEO take?
Usually months, not weeks. How fast depends on your competitors and on how complete your Business Profile and site are today.
Do you guarantee rankings?
No. No one can guarantee a spot on Google or in an AI answer. We show you the work and the results.
Is AI SEO extra?
No. AI search optimization is included in SEO in every plan.
Am I locked into a contract?
The first 90 days are committed and billed monthly. After that it's month to month with 30 days' notice.
Who owns my accounts and website?
You do. Every account stays in your name, and website files and copy are yours once paid.
Will you work with my competitor?
No. We won't work with your direct competitor in your area.
Do I need a new website?
Not always. If yours can't turn visits into calls, we'll say so and quote a site separately.
Do you run Google Ads, Local Services Ads or ChatGPT ads?
Case by case. Our plans cover SEO, AI search, your Google Business Profile, reviews and conversion. When paid ads fit your market and goals, we scope Google Ads, Local Services Ads or ChatGPT ads in your proposal. Ad spend goes to the platform and isn't part of our fee.
