Plumbing PPC: Google Ads and Local Services Ads for Plumbers

A plumbing ad is only as good as the phone behind it: Local Services Ads can charge for a missed call in your listed hours, and Google Ads charges for every tap on your call button. Both reach people searching for a plumber, a drain cleaning or a water heater repair. Ads are case by case at Mindflow. When paid ads fit your market and goals, we scope Google Ads, Local Services Ads or ChatGPT ads in your proposal, next to the SEO, Business Profile and review work in our program.

When do ads make sense for a plumbing company?

Ads make sense for a plumber who can answer the phone in the hours the ads run, has trucks free for the calls they bring, and wants more of a specific job. Emergency ads only pay when someone picks up, and planned jobs like water heaters and repipes need a page that answers the buyer's questions.

Good signs:

  • Someone answers, every hour you advertise. That's the whole game for emergency calls (the next section shows why).
  • You know which jobs you wantemergency repairs, drain cleaning, water heaters, sewer lines or repipes, each with its own campaign and page.
  • Your reviews are recent.A Local Services ad displays your average rating and may show how many reviews you have.

Not yet:

  • After-hours calls go to a full voicemail box, or to a cell phone in a truck.
  • You can't tell which calls booked.Without call tracking, a cheap campaign full of wrong numbers looks like a winner.

How ads compare with ranking on the map for free is in local SEO vs Local Services Ads, and with SEO in SEO vs PPC.

What do emergency calls cost a plumber on Local Services Ads?

You pay for answered calls, and for missed calls in business hours when the caller stays on more than 20 seconds, voicemail included. Google takes those hours from your Business Profile, and a new ad runs all day unless you set a schedule. So if your profile says 24/7 and nobody answers at night, you can pay for missed calls.

How Google's rules play out for a plumbing company:

Your setupWhat Google does
Profile hours say 24/7, phones go to voicemail at nightNight calls that last over 20 seconds can be charged, voicemail or not
Profile hours match when you really answerUnanswered calls outside those hours aren't charged
Ad schedule limited to your business hours (in the Local Services dashboard, "Only during my business hours"; after the move, the campaign's ad schedule in Google Ads)The ad runs only then; a free version of your listing may show the rest of the time
Message leads turned onGoogle says messages and bookings help you get leads at nights and weekends, when you can't answer

Missed calls also count against you in ranking: Google says they "may negatively affect your responsiveness." If you do answer around the clock, advertise around the clock; if not, match your hours to your phones. How fast those calls get answered matters too; see our speed to lead guide. Charges and credits in full are in our Local Services Ads guide.

What does Google check before a plumber runs Local Services Ads?

Google treats plumbing as an urgent category. Its checks, which Google marks for select users, cover business and owner background, registration, general liability insurance and state licenses, plus every worker who performs your core services, including independent contractors and temporary workers. Google doesn't charge for the checks and validates licenses against state databases.

Customers see the result as the Google Verified badge, which replaced Google Guaranteed, and a new plumber or helper who goes to customers' homes needs a check too. Plumbing also sits in the first group for Google's LSA migration into Google Ads: storefront plumbers Google selects from August 2026, service-area plumbers in late 2026, everything left in 2027. After migrating, there's no more license or insurance reverification, the weekly budget is split into a daily average, and max-per-lead bidding goes away. Local Services Ads explains the move; Google Verified explains the badge.

Does a plumbing ad need your license number?

In some states, yes. Texas is a clear example: its plumbing board requires every advertisement by a plumbing company that solicits plumbing business to state the license number of its responsible master plumber of record, "regardless of the type of media used." Other states have their own rules. Check yours before your ads go live. This isn't legal advice.

What the Texas rule, 22 TAC §367.10(c), covers:

  • The defaultadvertisements "designed to solicit plumbing business state the license number of the RMP of record" (the company's responsible master plumber), with business cards, flyers and referral coupons named as examples.
  • The exceptionsnational or interstate TV and a franchisor's internet ads for its franchisees, each with a statement that local license numbers are available on request; ads with no visual part, such as radio, where the solicitor states the company complies with licensing; nominal items like caps and uniforms; signs at your permanent location; and third-party listings you don't control.
  • What it doesn't sayit doesn't name search ads or websites. A search ad has little room, so ask the board, or your attorney, how it applies to yours.

In our website study, 385 of 566 plumbing homepages used the word "licensed". A landing page is the easiest place to show the number, next to the call button. State license-number rules for contractors are covered in our construction advertising guide, and how buyers look you up in our contractor license lookup entry.

When should plumbing ad budgets move?

Less often than in seasonal trades, but don't assume a calendar. Nationally, plumbing searches peaked in July in 2023, September in 2024 and March in 2025. Emergencies arrive all year, so a steady base budget with room to rise during a freeze or a storm can suit a plumbing account.

Search budgets are daily. A Local Services budget is weekly until Google moves your account into Google Ads, where the weekly figure becomes a daily average and the month stays capped at that average times 30.4. A sample of cities is on our plumbing marketing page.

Google rounds these estimates, so close months can swap places. Searches aren't booked jobs.

What should a plumber ask before hiring anyone to run ads?

Ask who owns the accounts, what happens to calls after hours and whether the ads carry the license number your state requires. Of the seven plumbing PPC agency pages we read on November 1, 2026, none said who owns the ad account, one stated its contract terms, and none mentioned license numbers in ads.

AskWhat to listen for
What hours will our ads run, and who answers? The hours your phones are covered
Do our Business Profile hours match when someone answers?Checked before launch and again after any move into Google Ads
Is the after-hours voicemail setup costing us leads?A look at charged missed calls by hour
Are emergency and planned jobs separate campaigns? Two campaigns, two budgets, two pages
Will our license number appear where our state requires it?On the ads or pages the rule covers, checked against your state's text

To count only real calls, set a minimum call length; our Google Ads handbook shows where, along with who should own and pay for the account.

Quick answer

How does Mindflow handle ads for a plumbing company?

Case by case. Ads aren't sold on their own at Mindflow: they sit beside SEO, your Business Profile, reviews and conversion work in one program. When paid ads fit your market and goals, we scope Google Ads, Local Services Ads or ChatGPT ads in your proposal. Every account is yours, and you pay ad spend to the platform.

There's no promise of calls, rankings or a return on that spend. See SEO for plumbers, and our PPC overview for how ads sit in the program.

The free AI Visibility Review lists your Business Profile gaps, and that profile's hours are the ones Local Services uses for missed-call charges. It doesn't review ad accounts.

  • 250% more qualified leads
  • from 1 county to several across Metro Atlanta
  • from 5 people to 12
  • reputation work that helped maintain a 4.9-star average rating.

Questions about plumbing PPC

How do we set a ceiling on what plumbing ads cost?

Start from the job, not the click. Work out what a booked drain clear and a booked water heater replacement are each worth, and the most you'd pay to win one; our marketing budget guide shows the math. Google doesn't publish a price list, so your budget is the ceiling. When ads fit your plan, your proposal scopes them, and ad spend is paid to Google.

Can we stop paying for leads for jobs we don't do?

Mostly through your settings. In Local Services Ads you switch job types on or off for each industry, and Google no longer credits leads marked "job type not serviced" or "geo not serviced." So leave off every job type you don't want, set only the areas you'll drive to, and rate bad leads in Google's feedback survey.

Should water heater and drain jobs share a campaign?

Better not. A water heater replacement is a bigger, planned purchase; a clogged drain is often today's problem. Separate campaigns let you set a budget for each, send each search to its own page and see which one books jobs. Our plumbing leads guide covers the wider lead mix.

Do the missed-call rules change when our account moves into Google Ads?

Google's migration page says you still pay only for valid leads. What moves is where you set things: business hours still come from your Business Profile, which syncs one way to Google Ads, while the ad schedule and service areas are edited in the campaign's settings. Recheck both after the move, so night calls aren't chargeable by accident.

How long does SEO take?

Usually months, not weeks. How fast depends on your competitors and on how complete your Business Profile and site are today.

Do you guarantee rankings?

No. No one can guarantee a spot on Google or in an AI answer. We show you the work and the results.

Is AI SEO extra?

No. AI search optimization is included in SEO in every plan.

Am I locked into a contract?

The first 90 days are committed and billed monthly. After that it's month to month with 30 days' notice.

Who owns my accounts and website?

You do. Every account stays in your name, and website files and copy are yours once paid.

Will you work with my competitor?

No. We won't work with your direct competitor in your area.

Do I need a new website?

Not always. If yours can't turn visits into calls, we'll say so and quote a site separately.

Do you run Google Ads, Local Services Ads or ChatGPT ads?

Case by case. Our plans cover SEO, AI search, your Google Business Profile, reviews and conversion. When paid ads fit your market and goals, we scope Google Ads, Local Services Ads or ChatGPT ads in your proposal. Ad spend goes to the platform and isn't part of our fee.
